HOLLAND'S WISH LIST

  • An accessible, nature inspired play space for children with mobility, sensory, hearing and visual disabilities.

  • Elevated sand table that is wheelchair accessible.

  • Smooth, even, resilient surface and ramp that allows access of play to and from our 3-5 yr old daycare to our pre-school outdoor space.

  • A play structure that is wheelchair accessible.

  • Additional outdoor bench seating.

  • A climbing wall.

Securing project funding through donations from our community, local businesses, service clubs, grants and organizations helps support the OSNS in making critical improvements to our existing 3-5 playground and therapy space and will help ensure its timely development.

INVESTING IN THE WELLBEING OF CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES

A PLAYGROUND IN NEED

The current Kinder Bear 3-5-year-old playground space is in need of significant repair. The wood playground structure is extremely weathered and will need to be replaced and relocated. There are drainage issues, uneven spots and areas covered with grass that are difficult to maintain and causing mobility hazards for some children. Once completed, there will be artificial turf, blended with resilient surfaces that will offer fewer hazards to children with walkers and / or wheel chairs.

OUR VISION

To have a universally designed, sensory-rich environment that enables all children to develop physically,

socially and emotionally.

An engaging place that provides a level of challenge and offers opportunity to succeed.

A well-designed place that addresses varied levels of ability.

A place that goes beyond minimum accessibility to create play experiences that meet a variety of needs and interests.

PROJECT STATUS

Playground Drainage - Address drainage issues first by digging a drainage basin and then installing a suitable grate to collect water and reduce the impact of heavy rains and snow melting conditions in the Kinder Bear playground.

Estimated Cost: $2K - donation by Grizzly Excavating Ltd.

Phase 1 - complete

Phase 2

Accessibility Ramp, Retaining Wall, Ground Prep, Resilient Surfaces - Construction of a permanent accessibility ramp with a rubberized surface between OSNS daycare and preschool and increasing the footprint of rubberized surfaces to expand accessible play spaces.

The OSNS is currently looking to improve outdoor accessibility between these two spaces for children that utilize mobility aids and for the staff that support these children. Adding an accessible ramp would decrease risk of potential accidents and injuries.

Estimated Cost: $96,674

Donations: $17K - Summerland Health Care Auxiliary

$2k - IG Wealth Management - Penticton

Phase 3

Installation of Synthetic Turf - In conjunction with the rubberized surface, synthetic turf will provide a safe, practical, and natural looking playground setting. It will allow for more access to those using mobility devices, it offers improved drainage, reduces heat, it is low maintenance and provides an inviting and comfortable area to sit, lie and play on.

Estimated Cost: $53,030

Phase 4

Outdoor Play Elements - Play is a fundamental human right of all children, including children with disabilities, who deserve equal access to play opportunities. This is especially important given that play is integral to children’s cognitive, physical, and social development as well as their emotional well-being.

PLAY ELEMENTS

Climbing Wall & Mural

The pediatric climbing wall fosters children's body control, movement, and core strength. It aids in brain development, muscle and bone strengthening, balance, coordination, flexibility, and endurance. It enhances a child's confidence, self-awareness, and decision-making skills. Providing a safe environment for skill testing and growth, it lays the groundwork for lifelong physical development.

HOLLAND

Born nine weeks pre-mature and later diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Holland has been a part of the OSNS family since the age of 5 weeks. It is our hope that Holland and children like Holland who have a motor disability, can have improved accessibility to inclusive play components and safer access to all of our outdoor play and therapy spaces.
